Much to the disgust of the distinguished limo hire operators, there are a number of limo hire companies which are marketing themselves as providing luxury transport in limousines but are not much more than an over glorified taxi company.
This in turn has infuriated the taxi companies as they are losing their business to a ‘limo hire company’ which is offering a limousine and chauffeur for the same price or cheaper, than a taxi ride.
The cabbies in Toronto have now had enough and are picketing over the limo hire companies they call ‘bandit’ limos. The taxi drivers in Toronto plan to picket at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel and Queens Quay against the bandit limo drivers who the taxi drivers say are paying off the doormen of the hotels to get the customers for their own business. Taking the customers from the taxi companies in this way is said to be costing them millions of dollars a year in lost fares.
The taxi drivers are so concerned they have formed the Toronto Coalition of Concerned Taxi Drivers which is the group who have organised the picket. The group believes it is an operation which is spread throughout the city of Toronto and the managers of the hotels are simply turning a blind eye to the limo drivers who are bribing their doormen.
While there are regulations restricting the limo hire industry to only picking up fares and passengers if they are booked in advance, there is no predetermined amount of time to clarify ‘in advance’ and the doormen are obviously ‘booking’ the limo drivers in some form.
The business of a taxi driver is heavily dependent on how fast they can work, as to how they pick up their clients. The taxi drivers also have to pay to use the dispatch system at the airport and service the calls, so in return the hotel workers are only supposed to flag down Toronto-registered taxis.
While most limo hire companies uphold the integrity of the industry and don’t look for cheap and easy fares such as those from hotels and airports, there are some which find it easier to operate as a slightly classier version of a taxi, than as a legitimate, top quality, service orientated limousine hire service.
